Cantaloupe
Cantaloupe or Musk Melon is a delicious orange fleshed fruit which tastes great as slices or made into melon balls and added to a fruit salad.
Sow seeds outdoors after danger of frost, or set out seedlings after Mother’s Day.
Plant 3-4 seeds in small mounds as you would watermelon. Vines will spread only slightly. Typically makes 2 fruits per plant.
Fruits are ready in late summer when they begin to yellow and become fragrant.
To save seeds, let premium fruit(s) from healthy plant(s) develop past the point of preferred human consumption. (These plants should not be near other Cucumis Melo varieties) Slice off one end and pour seeds into a glass vessel and add water. Discard any seeds that float. Dump out remaining water and spread seeds to dry in a thin layer. Store dry seeds in a paper bag, seed packet, or muslin sachet for next year.
